About me
Hi, I’m Tone Eide Hilmen — a service designer, systems thinker, and visual communicator with a deep commitment to social and environmental transformation.
At the heart of my practice is a desire to make systemic change feel human, more-than-human, tangible, critical, radical, and hopeful. Whether I’m designing a digital tool, a learning journey, or a futures workshop, I work collaboratively to translate complexity into clarity, and ideas into action.

Masters in service systems design
I’ve currently completed a Master’s in Service Systems Design at Aalborg University in Copenhagen, where I’ve specialized in systemic design, futures thinking, and participatory methods. My thesis explored how we can design learning experiences that build futures literacy and agency among change-makers — a project grounded in co-creation with civil society and educationan actors such as Bikubenfonden and Copenhagen Institute of future studies , and it was awarded top marks for its critical and practical contribution.

Bachelors in informatics and UX
My background also includes a Bachelor in Informatics: Design, Use, Interaction from the University of Oslo, where I developed a solid foundation in UX research, interaction design, and programming. Before that, I studied photography and outdoor life, and I continue to use photography and visual storytelling as tools for communication, activism, and hope.
Across roles in UX design, teaching, facilitation, and communication — from coding workshops for kids at Schibsted to designing a menopause app with Kræftens Bekæmpelse during my internship at 1508 — I’ve found joy in working across disciplines to create thoughtful, inclusive, and action-oriented experiences. I pride myself as both a generalist and a specialist in many different topics.
Interdisciplinarity, generalism, and specialism

My values

❤️ Inclusivity
I design with and for people who are often left out. I care about accessibility, equity, and creating spaces where diverse voices are heard, centered, and valued.

🧠 Curiosity
I ask a lot of questions, and love learning new things. I believe in staying open, unlearning, and letting discomfort be a gateway to growth.
🌱 Sustainability
Social, cultural, ecological, digital. I seek long-term thinking and regenerative ways of working that support both people and planet.
I'm a deeply values-driven designer, and everything I do, whether it’s designing a workshop, prototyping an app, facilitating a learning journey, or taking photos, it is all guided by a set of principles I keep returning to. These values help me navigate complexity, stay grounded in care, and imagine better futures.
🎨 Imagination & Creativity
Creativity isn’t just aesthetics - it’s a strategy for survival, and imagination is a tool for change. I use both to challenge the status quo and dream alternatives into being.
🌀 Systems Thinking
I’m drawn to complexity. I look for patterns, relationships, and root causes—across disciplines, sectors, and scales.
🧰 From Insight to Action
I turn ideas into experiments into reality. Whether through speculative prototypes or real-world pilots, I believe in making things tangible and actionable.
🤝 Collective Work
The best work is co-created. I thrive in cross-functional, transdisciplinary teams, where 1 + 1 = 3.
📚 Knowledge Sharing
Learning is most powerful when it’s shared. I design to teach, be taught, and build collective capacity.
🔍 Zooming In & Out
I balance detail-oriented, analytical thinking with a holistic, big-picture mindset. I move between micro and macro - between sticky post-its and systems maps - to understand complexity and design with clarity and care.
